Camberwell and Peckham CLP notes that:

  • Tottenham CLP have passed a motion in support of the group Women’s Place UK (WPUK).

  • WPUK, while it shares with the Labour Party many important objectives with regard to women’s rights, is also in disagreement with the Labour Party with regard to the issue of gender self-identification.

  • That WPUK’s insistence on what it calls “sex based” determination of gender – rather than self-identification – excludes trans and non-binary people from WPUK’s gender definitions.

  • That the Labour Party in a statement in November 2019 declared that:
Our commitment to reforming the Gender Recognition Act, to introduce self-declaration for transgender people, is undimmed.
Labour will amend the Equality Act 2010 to ensure it protects trans people by changing the protected characteristic of ‘gender assignment’ to ‘gender identity’ and removing other outdated language such as ‘transsexual’.
The Equality Act will continue to allow for separate and single-sex services, providing that such treatment by a provider is justified, but no spaces will be permitted to discriminate against trans people.

Camberwell and Peckham CLP believes that:

  • Trans women are women and have a right to self-identification with regard to gender.

  • Trans men are men and have a right to self-identification with regard to gender.

  • Non-binary and gender queer or gender non-specific people have a right to self-identification with regard to gender.

Camberwell and Peckham CLP resolves:

  • To call upon our comrades in Tottenham CLP to reconsider their support for WPUK.

  • To express solidarity with Tottenham Young Labour in their swift condemnation of the actions of their CLP.

  • To express our support for the position of the Labour Party with regard to the reform of the Gender Recognition Act.

  • To declare that the Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party will always be open and welcoming to trans and non-binary comrades.

  • To declare that any single-sex space which the CLP creates will not in any way discriminate against trans and non-binary comrades.

  • To express solidarity with all trans people, all non-binary and gender non-conforming people, and all people of good conscience against the tide of transphobia and anti-trans hatred which is currently pervasive, and which has no place in our party, our communities, or in our world.
