Youth on youth violence meeting – Saturday 3 November 2018 (1pm to 3pm)

An important community meeting is taking place in Southwark on the youth on youth violence that is blighting our communities. I hope you will attend, take part in the discussions and give your support.

Youth on youth violence is a crime that has tragically claimed the lives of many people in London, particularly young Black men. According to the Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime, Southwark is the second highest borough in the capital for knife crime, with 805 incidents taking place in the last twelve months – some of these have been murders. A disproportionate number of these have happened in Camberwell and Peckham. This meeting is therefore long overdue. It brings together former gang members, parents of victims, police, politicians and members of the public to debate the issue and try to find solutions.

The event is supported by Southwark Momentum, the Camberwell and Peckham Constituency Labour Party and UK charity the Citizen Journalism Educational Trust.

Confirmed speakers are: Metropolitan Police Borough Commander Simon Messinger, Deputy Director at the Ministry of Justice Catherine Hinwood who looks after policy and support services for victims of crime, Mothers Against Violence founder Patsy Mckie and former gang member and consultant for Gangsline (a non-profit group that supports young people involved in gangs) Sephton Henry.

Venue: the Nunhead Community Centre, 5 Nunhead Green, Nunhead, London SE15 3QQ.

All Women Forum  | Workshop | Saturday 27 October 2018

Our Women’s Officer, Izzy Niven, is setting up a Women’s Forum for our Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party women members and she needs you to tell her what you want it to look like.

Launching Our All Women Forum | Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party
Launching Our All Women Forum | Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party

This workshop is for all our women members to come together and scope what a supportive, empowering, and democratic Women’s Forum for Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party will look like. All women members of Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party are invited.

All Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) are entitled to set up a Women’s Forum, with all women members within the constituency automatically joined. A Women’s Forum is an excellent vehicle for self-organisation, it can decide when and how to meet, fundraise, define it’s own campaigning and training priorities and elect two delegates to the CLP General Committee (GC).

Children are welcome to this workshop too. We will have a ‘kids-corner’ set up with toys and activities to keep them entertained. FREE event. Book your place here via Eventbrite.

In this session we will map links between our CLP members, unions and local fast food and restaurant chains – such as Weatherspoons, KFC and McDonalds – and discuss ways to support workers in those branches to unionise.

All members are welcome, especially if you have no prior experience of union organising. We’re prioritising places for our Youth and BAME members. Email our constituency TULO Officer Alice Martin at cplabourtulo@gmail.com to reserve your FREE training place.

Campaigning for a Labour Victory in Wimbledon – Saturday 20 October 2018

Members from Camberwell & Peckham will be out on the campaign trail in Wimbledon on Saturday 20 October. Labour’s PPC for Wimbledon is Jackie Schneider. At the 2017 General Election, the Labour vote in Wimbledon rose by over 45% in a seat previously deemed unwinnable. If we are to form a majority next time it is the kind of seat we have to win. Jackie is a fantastic local trade unionist who has already kicked off an energetic campaign. However, she needs all the support she can get to maintain momentum and ensure a Labour gain whenever the time comes.
We’ll be meeting at Peckham Rye station at 10.10 for a 10.18 train.
For full details, see the Facebook event here.
For further information, contact our Vice-Chair, Campaigns, Jack Taylor (candplabourcampaigns@gmail.com) or on 07983 476831.

Campaigning outside of an election campaign gives us the opportunity to speak to local people about the issues that most matter to them and support our Southwark Labour Councillors to best represent our communities.

If you have any questions at all about the session, or the support we can provide women to be active campaigning members, contact our Women’s Officer, Izzie Niven at cplabourwomen@gmail.com.
