Covid-19 Appeal

Financial Appeal for Southwark Foodbanks

Camberwell & Peckham Labour Party has suspended all meetings, events and campaigning, in response to the guidance received from the national Labour Party. The Mayoral/GLA Elections scheduled for Thursday 7 May 2020 have also been postponed for 12 months.

This decision doesn’t mean, however, that members must sit by passively as the infection rate across the UK rises. The Government may be displaying no lead in how to respond to this potential crisis, making it imperative that we do this ourselves.

Here are a few practical steps that you can take to help those affected by the spread of the Covid-19 virus in our local community:

1. Donate money

As people get laid off at work or fall ill, many will have to resort to Foodbanks to survive. We have two in our area, both doing excellent work – but they are likely to be swamped by demand as families and individuals reach crisis point and are unable to cope.

If you make an online donation to our appeal link here, we will divide this money between the Central Southwark & Southwark Foodbanks and transmit all donations twice-weekly. The donation page says you’re donating to our campaigning work, but 100% of all donations we receive via this channel will go directly and speedily to the two Foodbanks.

2. Sign up to the Mutual Aid Groups

Thousands across Southwark have already signed up, to offer help and support to those who need it. Those self-isolating through ill-health or because they wish to avoid contracting the virus as a result of an underlying health condition cannot do this without assistance from those around them. You can volunteer to do shopping, walk their dog, collect prescriptions or even have a phone chat, so that these people aren’t left entirely to their own resources to survive, feeling vulnerable and isolated. If you’re a Facebook user, join the Southwark Group here.

3. Reach out

If you are a Camberwell & Peckham Labour member and find yourself in need of assistance or help during this crisis, let us know. Those facing financial hardship can consider suspending their Direct Debit membership payments and we can pursue how this is handled with the National Party – but only if we know. If you need practical assistance, we have many members involved in the Mutual Aid Groups forming across our area and can put one of these in touch with you. Email us at cplaboursec@gmail.com and we will get back to you.

4. Give Blood – #KeepDonating

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are working through the COVID-19 crisis supporting those who need blood and organs, but they will need support from the public.

Currently, blood stocks are at good levels but the NHS needs to keep them that way during these unprecedented times. This is why the NHS is urging people who can donate to #keepdonating (so long as you’re feeling healthy).

Important NHS advice:

  • Keep donating blood as normal (so long as you’re healthy).
  • Whatever happens, travelling to donate blood is classed as essential travel for the NHS.
  • Extra safety measures are in place at blood donation sessions.
  • Follow all the latest advice from the NHS.
  • Crucially: Blood donation saves lives. #keepdonating

If you aren’t a blood donor but would like to be please sign up at blood.co.uk.

Appointments are granted by blood type, so if your appointment isn’t for a number of weeks it’s not that they don’t need your blood, it’s that the NHS needs to make appointments available for blood types that are rarer or are needed with more urgency. For more information please visit blood.co.uk.
